Why Great Customer Service Still Matters in Interior Design

When did speaking to a real person become a luxury?
Have you noticed how hard it’s become to get hold of an actual human these days? You ring a company and end up pressing numbers and getting nowhere. You type a question online and get a chatbot that repeats the same line. Somewhere along the way, good old-fashioned customer service seems to have disappeared.
As a small business owner and Interior Designer in Harpenden, I’ve seen first-hand how important real communication is. Designing someone’s home isn’t a transaction - it’s a collaboration.
Design is personal - and so is service
Your home is where you relax, recharge and create memories. It’s full of personality, stories, and the small details that make it yours. That’s why I’ll never treat a design project like an order form.
When we work together, it starts with a proper conversation - whether in my Harpenden studio surrounded by samples or in your home. I want to know how you live, what you love, what you avoid, and how you want to feel in your space.
You simply can’t automate that kind of understanding.
Why customer service matters more than ever
Interior design projects can be complex - there are builders, deliveries, fabrics, lead times and all sorts of moving parts. Good customer service isn’t just about being polite; it’s about being present, reliable and calm through every stage.
When things go smoothly, it’s invisible - but when they don’t, you realise how much difference clear, human communication makes. My clients know they can always pick up the phone, drop me a text, or send an email and get me - not a call centre.
It’s that personal touch that turns what could be a stressful process into something enjoyable and creative.
Technology helps - but it can’t replace people
The screen should support the service - not replace it. A good design partnership needs empathy, intuition and conversation - all the things technology still can’t do.
And THIS is why the human touch never goes out of style
When you invite a designer into your home, you’re inviting them into your life. That deserves care, respect and personal attention.
So while the world might be moving towards automation, I’ll be staying firmly on the human side - listening, advising and creating beautiful, calm spaces that truly reflect you.
Because some things like good design and good manners - will never go out of style.
