The one thing that can completely change a room
When people tell me their living room feels a bit flat, more often than not, it’s the styling that’s missing. Cushions might seem like a small detail, but they’re one of the hardest-working pieces in a room. They soften sharp lines, add warmth and texture and help a space feel finished rather than simply furnished and help link the colours together.
I often leave choosing them until towards the end of a project because that’s when I know exactly what the room needs. Sometimes it’s a richer colour, sometimes it’s texture and sometimes it’s just that final layer that brings everything together.
They’re a low-risk way to be more adventurous
I completely understand why people play it safe with the bigger purchases. A new sofa is a big investment. So are curtains and wallpaper. If you’re unsure about introducing colour or pattern, cushions are where I’d always suggest starting.
They allow you to experiment without making a long-term commitment, and they’re one of the quickest ways to give a room a completely different feel. Swap them with the seasons, introduce a new accent colour or mix in a print you’ve always loved. It’s a simple change that makes a surprising difference.
Don’t buy them as a set
This is probably my biggest piece of advice. When every cushion is identical, a room can feel a little flat. Mixing fabrics, sizes and shapes creates far more interest and gives your home that relaxed, curated look that everyone is trying to achieve. The key is making sure they relate to one another. They don’t have to match, they just need to belong together.
How many cushions is too many?
Every household seems to have one person who loves them and one who thinks they’re completely unnecessary! Yes, you might have to move one before you sit down, but I’d argue that’s a small price to pay for a home that feels cosy, welcoming and thoughtfully put together.
After all, we don’t fill our homes with beautiful things purely because they’re practical. We choose them because they make us smile every time we walk through the door. In my eyes you can never have too many!
